I’m in Norway, where should I travel during my internship abroad?
Alright, you’ve planned to do your internship in Norway, and let’s be clear: you’ve made an excellent choice. The fjords, the mountains, the northern lights — all of it is already amazing. But you’re not the type to sit still for months. No, you’ve got the travel bug, you want to discover, explore, and take it all in. And honestly, that’s exactly what you should do when you’re on an internship abroad.
Because being in Norway also means you’re just a step away from plenty of amazing destinations you don’t visit every day. So today, let’s take a little tour of the places you can explore during your Norwegian internship. Pack your backpack, we’re going on a road trip!
Before you go: a quick practical reminder
Juste avant de rentrer dans le vif du sujet, deux-trois petits rappels utiles à garder en tête pour tous ces voyages annexes que tu pourrais faire :
From Norway, distances may seem big, but the connections are pretty well organized. Between ferries, domestic flights, and long-distance buses, you’ve got plenty of options to get around.
Prices are often steep. Let’s be honest: whether it’s in Norway, Iceland, or even the Faroe Islands, you’ll need a solid budget. But as always, with good planning, it’s doable. And these trips are absolutely worth every cent.
Pack the right clothes. Even in summer, in these parts of the world, it can be cool, wet, and windy. Layering will be your best friend.
Alright, here we go. Time for your Norwegian getaways!

Sweden: right next door, but a totally different vibe
Sweden: right next door, but a totally different vibe
Let’s start with the obvious — but the obvious we sometimes forget to seriously consider. Yes, Sweden is Norway’s direct neighbor. And honestly, visiting during your internship is super easy and super enjoyable.
The really cool part? Taking the ferry.
Yeah, it’s already part of the trip itself. You leave from Oslo’s port, or other coastal cities, and sail peacefully to Gothenburg or Stockholm. You cruise through stunning seascapes, passing islands, with the wind in your face (in a good way), and that unique Scandinavian light you won’t find anywhere else.
Once you’re there, what’s there to do?
In Stockholm, you’ll discover a city full of design and calm. The narrow streets of Gamla Stan (the old town) are beautiful, and you can spend hours strolling along the waterfront or visiting the museums (the Vasa Museum is pretty amazing).
In Gothenburg, the vibe is younger, more student-oriented. Lots of super cozy cafés, amazing food trucks, and even a nearby archipelago where you can go for walks along the Baltic Sea.
If you’ve got more time, you can even head north and explore Swedish Lapland. Encounters with reindeer, pristine snowy landscapes, northern lights… basically, enough to fill your Insta for months.
Sweden is easy, accessible, and perfect for a long weekend or a short break during your internship.

The Faroe Islands: the unexpected big crush
The Faroe Islands: the unexpected big crush
Alright, now we’re getting into something a bit more original. Because honestly, how many people around you have been to the Faroe Islands? Not many, right? And yet… what a gem.
Where exactly is it?
A small archipelago lost in the middle of the North Atlantic, between Scotland, Iceland, and Norway. The Faroe Islands belong to Denmark but have their own culture and even their own language. They’re made up of 18 volcanic islands, connected by impressive underwater tunnels or ferries.
Why is it great to go there during your internship?
- First, because it’s incredibly wild. Towering cliffs, fjords cutting into lush valleys, little houses with grass roofs, sheep everywhere (literally more sheep than people)… It feels like you’re in a movie set.
For hiking, it’s paradise. You can go on walks that lead to absolutely stunning views over the sea. Special mention for the hike to Lake Sørvágsvatn, which looks like the lake is floating above the ocean.
And then there are the birds. The Faroe Islands are a world-famous birdwatching spot. Puffins, gannets, Arctic terns… it’s a true spectacle.
How to get there?
There are direct flights from Oslo or Copenhagen, and also ferries departing from Denmark. It’s a little adventure in itself, but honestly, it’s worth the trip.

Iceland: an almost lunar journey
Iceland: an almost lunar journey
Iceland is kind of the ultimate dream for many travelers. And when you’re in Norway, you’re almost next door (relatively speaking — we’re still in the far north). It’s now or never to go.
Why should you absolutely go there during your internship?
The hot springs. You can’t go to Iceland without visiting the Blue Lagoon or, even better, the small natural hot springs hidden in the middle of nowhere. It’s THE Icelandic pleasure.
The whales. If you’re lucky (and often you are), you’ll spot whales offshore, especially from the ports of Husavik or Akureyri.
How to get there?
There are direct flights from Oslo and other Scandinavian cities. Budget-wise, it’s not cheap, but the experience is truly unique.

And if you stay in Norway?
And if you stay in Norway?
Even without leaving the country, you can already see some incredible things during your internship.
The Lofoten Islands: absolutely stunning landscapes, with sea and mountains. Charming little fishing villages, red stilt cabins, and hikes with panoramic views over the ocean.
Svalbard: for true adventurers. You’re just a few hundred kilometers from the North Pole, surrounded by polar bears and massive glaciers.
The Trollstigen (Troll’s Road) and Geirangerfjord: probably one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway.
In short: your internship becomes your base camp for exploring.
What’s great about an internship in Norway is that you’re never far from your next adventure. Whether you stay in the country or head to Sweden, Iceland, or the Faroe Islands, every trip is a chance to discover incredible places that are often out of reach when you live further south in Europe.
And above all, don’t forget: it’s during internships abroad that we often have the craziest trips of our lives. You’ve got time, freedom, and you’re in a period where everything feels easier. So make the most of it!

A few handy tips before your Nordic adventures
Alright, before you rush to book your ferry to Sweden or your flight to Iceland, let me give you a few simple tips that can really make a difference on your trip.
1️⃣ Never underestimate the weather.
In Scandinavia, the weather is a bit of a lottery. Even in summer, you can get icy winds and rain falling sideways. So always pack appropriate clothes. Layers are your best friend. A compact down jacket, a sturdy windbreaker, and good waterproof shoes — you’re ready to face almost anything.
2️⃣ Plan your budget.
We’ve said it several times, but it’s worth repeating: everything is expensive. Transport, food, accommodations on the islands… it’s not cheap. Make sure to book everything in advance, especially during high season. And take advantage of hostels or shared Airbnbs to keep costs down and meet people.
3️⃣ Keep your eyes—and your network—wide open.
During your side trips, you’ll meet people from everywhere: locals, other international students, solo travelers… It’s often a great chance to make awesome contacts and maybe even plan new group trips. That’s part of the Erasmus experience and doing an internship abroad: expanding your circle, even when you least expect it.
4️⃣ Use your base in Norway to plan smart.
Norway is super well connected to other Nordic countries. Being on-site often gets you better rates on some routes than you’d get leaving from France or Italy. Sometimes, companies even offer discounts for Erasmus students — so always check for those little hidden perks.
5️⃣ And most importantly… don’t wait until the last minute.
The more you plan ahead, the better you optimize your budget, and the more you can fully enjoy each destination. Because trust me: it would be a shame to miss out on the Faroe Islands just because you didn’t book your ferry early enough.
