Bulgaria was for a long time not the promised land of for LGBTQ+ people. The situation is not optimal, the country recognizes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people but they do not have the same legal rights, even though homosexuality is legal in Bulgaria. Bulgarian society is becoming more and more accepting of LGBTQ+. In terms of legislation, the country is improving the situation of LGBTQ+ people and since 1992, associations have been created to defend the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
