Hello, you want to go on an ERASMUS course in the Netherlands and you are wondering if there is any important information you need to know before making your decision? You’ve come to the right place! 🙂

Internship in the Netherlands: climate

The Netherlands has a temperate maritime climate with mild winters and cool summers. It is a windy country and rainfall can be frequent. In winter, average temperatures range from 2.5°C in the north of the country to 4°C in the west. In summer, temperatures are mild but with little sunshine. Temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C.

Do an internship in the Netherlands: transport

In the Netherlands you can use the bus, tram, train or metro. For the bus, you can use the chipkaart OV, which allows you to choose between three options: anonymous, personal and professional. The anonymous card is used by people who use the bus occasionally. For frequent travellers, I recommend that you take the personal option, which will give you a discount on the subscription. With your chipkaart-OV card you can use any bus. Please note that in the Netherlands, cash is no longer accepted for the purchase of tickets and that prices are set per kilometre.

Internship in the Netherlands: a safe country?

As in other major European cities, the major Dutch cities are safe. However, pickpockets may be present at nightfall. I therefore recommend that you follow the basic safety rules, i.e. keep your identity and travel documents in a safe place, do not carry a large amount of money and carry bags that can be closed.

Internship in the Netherlands: local specialities

The Netherlands is one of the European countries that tolerate the sale and consumption of cannabis. Consumption is regulated, however, as cultivation, sale and public consumption are prohibited by law. Marijuana and hashish are consumed in coffee shops. Coffee shops are forbidden to minors.

Internship in the Netherlands: cost of living

The cost of living in the Netherlands is 1.46% higher than in France. To give you an idea, a public transport pass costs around €88 in the Netherlands compared to an average of €75 in France. A meal in a mid-range restaurant will cost you an average of 30€ in the Netherlands compared to an average of 25€ in France. So I would advise you to plan a bigger budget.
