Hello, if you’re here, it’s probably because Latvia attracts you for an internship abroad. Here you can find all the advice you need before going to Latvia!
What to pack and what climate?
Latvia has a continental climate. Winters are cold and long while summers are hot but short. In winter, the days are much shorter than in France as there are only 6 hours and 40 minutes of daylight at the winter solstice. Summer days are very long, as the sun rises at 4.30am and does not set until 10.20pm. So you can enjoy the day and the terraces in summer! So I advise you to take your down jacket and gloves for the winter and light clothes for the summer!
What transport to take in Latvia? And to go beyond the borders?
Once you arrive in Latvia, you can travel to different cities by bus, which is the cheapest way to get around. Buses are available to take you from point A to point B. The idea of the internship abroad is also to see as much of the countryside as possible. Therefore, once you are in Latvia, you will be able to reach the border countries by bus or coach. You can also take advantage of being in Latvia to go to Sweden (Stockholm) by ferry via Riga. The ferry can also take you to Germany, Sweden, Lithuania (Klaipèda), Finland (Helsinki) with a stopover in Estonia (Tallin). It is also possible to travel by train to Estonia. You can take the bus to Poland (Warsaw), Lithuania (Vilnius and Kaunas) and Estonia (Tallin and Tartu). As you can see, you can travel to various border countries from Lithuania.
Is Latvia a safe country?
Latvia is a safe country with a low crime rate. However, I recommend that you remain vigilant and take good care of your belongings, especially in tourist areas where pickpockets and robberies are regular occurrences.
What about culture in Latvia?
Latvia is one of the countries that was Christianised the latest in Europe. Latvians are still attached to ancestral rites of a pagan nature. At the autumn and spring equinoxes, Latvians gather around a bonfire to celebrate. An opportunity to meet people not to be missed!
